THE PIANO MAN'S WORLD TOUR

When Robert Kemble began importing German pianos into the UK in the 1890s, he could hardly have imagined that a century later the company that bears his name would be benefiting from Japanese links to export successfully from the UK.

The unusual result is one of the longest-running associations between UK and Japanese companies. It began in 1967 when Yamaha of Japan gave its UK organ agency to Kemble, then based in London. Now, after a series of deals deepening the relationship, Yamaha has a majority shareholding in Yamaha-Kemble Music, the Milton Keynes based sales company for most Yamaha musical instruments in the UK. Yamaha also has a majority stake in Kemble, based in nearby Bletchley.

Kemble began manufacturing Yamaha pianos for the UK market in 1984 and started exporting them to continental Europe two years later. Currently, two-thirds of the Bletchley factory's output is of Yamaha pianos, and 75 per cent of what it makes is exported.

Although Yamaha pianos account for a greater proportion of export sales, the Kemble brand has, over the past 30 years had considerable success in new overseas markets. In the 1980s. “80 per cent of exports went to continental Europe”, says Brian Kemble, joint managing director. This, however, has fallen to below 50 per cent as sales in Asia and North America have been built up.

British pianos are perceived as premier brands, and Asia's increasing affluence means more people can afford them. Cracking the market, however, has meant hard work. “We've gone out there and done a lot of footslogging. If we had not visited, they would have bought something else”, says Mr. Kemble.

Building up North American sales over the past three years has also involved a tremendous amount of legwork, identifying the top 200 dealers and what they stock, and visiting trade shows. Of course, the Yamaha connection has helped. “It gives us credibility in the US,” says Mr. Kemble.

People would say "Who is Kemble?" They are not interested in dealing with small companies.

Over to you 1

What are the difficulties facing a small firm that wants to export to a particular country for the first time? First of all, cracking its market, so as people of that country could trust the small firm's goods.

Over to you 2

Work with a partner. A is the boss of a small manufacturing company that is beginning to export. (Choose the type of product that you make). В is an import agent looking for new products to import. A and B happen to be sitting next to each other on a plane. Roles play the conversation. Start with small talk, then talk about the possibility of doing business together. Finish by saying what you will do to keep in touch and what the next step will be. If you're working by yourself, write some lines of dialogue from the conversation.

A: Мr Jones, I heard you were the director of the small American company dealing with production of modern electronics. Can you say what do you produce?

B: Yes, I can. Stuff to the computers, software. And as your name, forgive?

A: I am Mr. Brown, import agent. I am from London, looking for a partner. Could import your products to Great Britain. And do you, sometimes, not in «Microsoft Corporation» work?

B: No, not in «Microsoft Corporation». However our company enough successful and I am ready to cooperate with you. Tell me your bank essential elements and we can make first agreement.

Module 2

WINNING WAYS: DOES IT PAY TO BE COMPETITIVE IN THE WORKPLACE?

Judging how competitive we should be in today's workplace is one of the most difficult problems for job-starters, according to Sue Cartright, an organizational psychologist. “We've inherited the values of the eighties, in which individualism and greed were rewarded”, she points out, “yet the nineties encourage collaboration and cooperation”.

In fact, says Angela Baron of the Institute of Personnel and Development, a surprising number of people damage their career prospects on entering a new office because they misjudge how competitive they should be. There are solutions however. “The first step is to find out about the environment itself”, she suggests. Too often, secretarial staff forgets that, while you may not be a cut-throat sales person yourself, the chances are that if you are working among them. It's a value likely to spread to the entire office.

Watch how people work, she advises, because attitudes are not always predictable. For example, increasing numbers of organizations are attempting to create a non-hierarchical atmosphere. Among these is London-based agency St Luke's. “Nobody has a desk; they can sit and work anywhere”, explains marketing manager Juliet Soskice. “There's a collaborative atmosphere, with everyone encouraged to put forward ideas, a secretary trying to prove herself by any means possible would hardly be welcome”.

According to organizational psychologist Judy Rose, you're less likely to be competitive if you're female. In fact new research by Peter York concludes that pushy women don't tend to make it to the top anyway. The study found that in very competitive environments, female staff could be anxious and intense. “It sounds like a stereotype but research shows women's style tends to be one of cooperation rather than competitiveness”, Rose explains. “Even as young children, boys are brought up with a focus on competitive sports, whereas girls are brought up to share and play in groups”. This, she believes, puts women at particular risk of being taken advantage of by more merciless colleagues. Careers adviser Susan Jeffcock disagrees.

Another recent study by Tuvia Melamid found that most successful female managers exhibited `macho kick-ass' characteristics. One of the reasons for this difference is that the York research focused on Britain's most successful female chief executives, most of whom are over 40, while Melamid focused on managers who are mostly in their twenties and thirties. This shows how much age has to do with competitiveness - the latter groups are 1980s children whereas the older women weren't raised with such hard values.

І. What were the work values of the 1980s? And the 1990s? (lines 1-12) In your experience, which values are 'winning' now?

I noticed the work values of the eighties were rewarded individualism and greed, yet the nineties encouraged collaboration and cooperation. In my own experience, the latter values are “winning” now.

True or false? (lines 1-44) Correct the false statements

a) It's easy to know how competitive to be when you start work in a new office.

False

You should find out about the environment in order to…

True

If you work with cut-throat salespeople, this will not affect you.

False

Some organizations are non-hierarchical, but their number is not increasing.

False

One non-hierarchical organization is St Luke's agency.

True

People at St Luke's have their own offices.

False

Everybody is encouraged to say what they think at St Luke's.

True

Assertive, competitive people are welcome at St Luke's.

True

Find adjectives in lines 45-75 to complete these definitions

Someone

who is aggressive and determined to succeed is pushy.

who is very worried is anxious.

whose feelings are very strong is intense.

who is cruel and shows no kindness is merciless.

usually a man, who behaves in a way that shows their strength and lack of concern for feelings is `macho kick-ass'.

f) who reaches their goals and is admired by others is successful.

IV. Why, according to lines 59-66, are boys more competitive than girls? Why does Tuvia Melamid not believe this, at least in relation to women managers? (lines 69-84) What might explain this difference of opinion?

Because as young children, boys are brought up with a focus on competitive sports, whereas girls are brought up to share and play in groups.

Tuvia Melamid don't believe this merely because she focused on managers who are mostly in their twenties and thirties instead of York's research focused on Britain's most successful female chief executives, most of whom are over 40. This shows how much age has to do with competitiveness - the latter groups are 1980s children whereas the older women weren't raised with such hard values.

Over tо you 1

You are a journalist working for a business magazine. You interview someone who works in an office very like the one at St Luke's. Find out what the advantages and disadvantages are.

If you are working on your own, write live questions and answers from this interview, know how to behave.

- Excuse me, do you work in this firm? If so, can I take a short interview at you?

- Yes, in this firm. How can I help you?

- Can it seems to me, but your office looks something like the London St. Luke`s agency. Tell me, how are you working here?

- Easily and naturally. Nobody has a separate cabinet or office, we work on common cause. I, for example, have been allowed to come in my boss' cabinet and use his computer. There is no hierarchy: everybody discharges the direct duties, there are no orders «from the top». Nobody puts itself higher than other. Absolute trust to each other. Everybody, even secretary, can give new suggestions, ideas, etc.

– To us such terms of labor. However not that at us mentality, so far…

– Forgive, it seemed to me a small accent in your pronunciation, where do you come from?

– I from Ukraine, it is Eastern Europe.

– You yourself can create a similar working atmosphere, it costs only to have the desire and study to it.

- Well, I thank you for an exhaustive interview.

Over to you 2

Do you think that men are naturally more competitive than women?

Well, I don't really think so. Men and women themselves are so different, thus to judge who are more competitive is like a fruitless work, especially nowadays. I have even been standing on just the other way about, that is women win at the moment. May be due to their beauty, or to something other. However, women now have the higher probability to receive a job, than other “strong half” of mankind, alas.
